The Story Begins...
Rolihlahla "Nelson" Mandela was born on the July 18th, 1918 in Qunu, South Africa. His father, named Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela belonged to the Madiba Clan, where he has the leader. His mother was Nonaqaphi Noekeni. Mandela became the ward of his clan at a very young age due to his father's untimely death. Because of his status as the son of a respected village chief, Mandela got to go to school, where he received his English name Nelson. He then attended University of Fort Hare and the University of Witwaterrand, where he worked to obtain a degree in law. After that, he went to Johannesburg and set up a law firm with his friend, Water Sisulu. It was the crimes and prejudices he dealt with on a day to day basis that began to influence him.
“After learning that his guardian had arranged a marriage for him, Mandela fled to Johannesburg and worked first as a night watchman and then as a law clerk while completing his bachelor’s degree by correspondence.” -History.com
